Problems Ordering OUTtv?

Posted on April 11th, 2008 by OUTtv Admin (Tanya)

It’s been great to get emails from people all over the world looking to subscribe to OUTtv. Unfortunately, our digital network is only available in Canada.  But that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to experience our fantastic programs.

If you are living in the US, some of OUTtv’s hottest shows air on the here! network. Visit their site to find out how to subscribe. For everyone else, stay tuned to our new website because soon we will have some full length episodes to offer and new shows debuting online like Boystown.

It has come to our attention that even though OUTtv is a “must carry” network in Canada and comes with certain packaging provisions as outlined by the CRTC, some customers have had trouble subscribing to OUTtv. Even if you had to specifically ask for OUTtv , or it wasn’t clear how we were offered or we weren’t part of a Free Preview, it’s very important that we are notified of these problems since not all cable/satellite providers pass this info along. Please share your experience here and/or send an email to support@outtv.ca.

I find it funny, you harper complaints against shaw because they put OutTV with the adult channels when “no adult content is offered”. Right now there is a show called Sexplorations on OutTV. How is that NOT adult content. And if this honestly isn’t “adult” content, I’ve been to this channel by accident, you should be ashamed of yourself and this should be adult content.

    Dear Tony Van,

    We appreciate your comments.

First of all, your IP address would indicate that you are a Shaw subscriber which would mean that if you had “been to the channel by accident”, that would indicate that you were cruising through the adult channels. You could hardly have been offended by that program if you were cruising the real adult services. Furthermore, you must have ordered our channel directly, because with Shaw you aren’t able to get OUTtv, unlike other channels, without ordering it specifically (which is a big part of our complaint by the way). But I digress…..

To address the issue regarding “adult content” there are no definitions of “adult content” in the CRTC regulations. The only objective definition of “adult content” is found in the Ontario Film Board guidelines which are available on their website. What routinely happens in Canada is that programs are submitted to the OFB for grading, as Ontario is the largest market, and this issue falls under their Provincial jurisdiction.

As this is the only government body that deals with the “adult content” issue, OUTtv voluntarily adheres to OFB guidelines on all our programming. When asked by BDUs, (like Shaw) we agree to put these guidelines into our contract to ensure continued compliance. We also ensure our major advertisers are comfortable, by following these guidelines for them as well.

In regards to “Sexploitiations” — this program is a Canadian-content program which originally aired on the CHUM networks. It is not adult content by the OFD definition. However, we still ensure that it is programmed late-night as it does have some explicit scenes.

We need shows like Sexplorations to fill our Canadian content requirements. In fact, I’d like to point out that one of your statements indirectly supports one of our primary concerns: If Shaw packaged OUTtv properly we would have more subscribers, and more revenue for Canadian programming to support continued development of shows like “Chris and John” for the mainstream gay and lesbian audience.

As an additional comment, many basic cable channels in Canada air explicit (but not adult) content in the evenings. For example, in my opinion, both Showcase and Bravo! have more sexually explicit programming than OUTtv.
