Shock and Yawn - Day One of L’Oreal Fashion Week…
OK kiddies grap a cappucino have I got news for you! In the highly anticpated opening night of L’Oreal Fashion Week there was much merriment and one very jawdropping incident. But first the review of the collections:
The Holt Renfrew Cocktail Party. As the fashion gliterati assmebled at Toronto’s Holt Renfew (http://www.holtrenfrew.com) the mood was festive. Several people including FDCC President, Robin Kay, Holt Renfrew’s Fashion Director Barbara Atkin and Joseph Mimran were in attendance. Well, if count out people like me FAB Magazine’s Gossip Guy Rolyn Chambers and several other fashion people. The one well noticed absence was la Beker herself. Swag: A Lancome Skin Care Product and a free tour of the Jackson Triggs winery.
As people snatched their mini HR signature hot pink bags people dashed for tags. Clicking in my John Fluevog shoes (http://www.fluevog.com) I literally bumped into celebrity stylist Phillip Bloch. After exchanging pleasantries I tackled Bloch for an interview (look for it in a coming edition of FAB Magazine) I told him how much I loved his new line of shoes (in a past edition of FAB Magazine) and headed to Nathans Phillip Square for Kim Mimran’s show Pink Tartan. (http://www.pinktartan.com)
Pink Tartan. Mix Givenchy’s signature style and Jackie O were to have a love child the result would be this collection. Maybe I’m just being cynical but it’s been done before. The models were clad with Hermes (http://www.hermes.com) bag and big Jackie O scarves. I smell Grace Kelly and host of “too chic for you” St. Tropez women who have got this signature look down pat. Though kudos to Kim for trying to bring it back. Swag: A Shick razor for women.
Now for the shock. If Robin Kay wasn’t going to the topic of editors for what goes down the runway nothing compares to have she did on the runway. As we took our seats for the Mango (http://www.mango.com) collection designed by Monica and Penelope Cruz (yes the star who dated Tom Cruise) Kay made her welcome speech. In only what could be defined as a “regretful bout with too much alcohol” she slurred her speech while wobbling in her stilletos. To the utter gasp of editors, writers and sponsors Kay had to be helped/escorted off stage by an aid. I’ll save you from the speech but the most hilarious part was when she referred to all the photographers as “snappers”. To say there will be potential calls for her resignation might be an understantement.
Mango. This is the part where I cannot be supportive. With Monica Cruz in attendance, Mango showed it Fall 08 collection to the horror of all the fashion press. Maybe their organizers did not read the eight foot sign in the front of the tents which read “Spring/Summer 09″ collections. Though I stayed through the entire show, many did not. Fed up with Kay’s antics and a literally unreportable Mango collection many left. It was a disappointment from the start right up to the fur-covered shrugs for spring?
Lastly as promised, I hit the J. Lindburg show as part of the INK’s Fashion Week events at Ultra (http://www.ink-00.com/fashionweek). Though it only showed two pieces of women’s the best part was monocrome outfit comprising of a black sleeveless top and a pleated white skirt. The rest was all mens.
Tommorw will be Day Two of Fashion Week fun, fashion and hopefully no more shock (other than on the runway). - Max MacDonald, Toronto Fashion Ambassador and Fashion/Style Editor or FAB Magazine (http://www.fabmagazine.com) and Fashion Reporter for Persian Magazine on Toronto’s Roger 10.
WAIT! You say. But Max what about the men’s? HA! To see my full report on the men’s collections pick up FAB Magazine on October 30th to see hot men in equally hot clothes!!!
