James’ and Joy’s Blog

Posted on January 21st, 2009 by James and Joy

Just for the sake of clarity, James is the President of OUTtv and Joy is the Chair. We are just back from England, and wanted to share a piece we read in the free London paper “METRO” while we were in the mother country!

There was a small article on January 09 under the heading “Jailing of gay men is ‘hate message’”. In Senegal, 9 men have been jailed for 8 years for homosexuality. They were convicted of  ’engaging in acts against the order of nature’ following a sham trial in the capital Dakar. The Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission protested that it was a sham trial.

Among those jailed was Aids activist Diadji Diouf. The commission labeled the sentences ‘a strong message of hatred’. We as Canadians should be outraged. Strong messages should be sent to our elected officials and all of us should boycott Senegal and any exports to Canada. It goes without saying that under no circumstances should we visit Senegal.  Africa in general has been a horrible place for our GLBT community for to long it has been given a free pass: NO MORE.

Standing by mute is not an option. Please let us know your thoughts!

- James
