top three reasons to visit halifax in the summer

Posted on August 21st, 2009 by Melissa

being that it is currently summer, i’ve decided to compile a list (because i still like lists) of the reasons to visit the lovely halifax during the summer months. these are just three of the many reasons to come and tour this beautiful province.

#1-halifax international buskers festival

eleven days of buskering fun. if you’ve ever witnessed any sort of street performing or buskering before you know what you’re in for with this festival:  jugglers, fire eaters, dancers, acrobats, comedians, magicians, girls in bikinis, men in underwear, air brushed tattoos and street meat! the halifax international busker festival is an annual totally queer friendly event that takes place along the boardwalk of halifax. with several stages and a new act every hour from 11AM to 11PM. the festival is free, but most audience members make a small donation at the end of the performance of what they deem to be appropriate. the boardwalk is the most busy you’ll see it during the entire year, and it attracts a wide slew of people making halifax a very diverse place to be!

#2-concerts, concerts and more concerts:

areas like citadel hill, the commons, alderney landing and many other small venues play host to amazing acts every summer. the amazing acts include but are not limited to KISS, the rolling stones and sir paul mccartney. all of these artists and more have graced halifax with their celebrity presence. pending weather some concerts draw as many as 50,000 locals and tourists. halifax hotels, bars and shops boom with business and equal just another reason to drop by and walk around.  note that the cannon is shot every day at noon from citadel hill. It’s not actually a cannon anymore, just a real sound and feel. don’t be embarrassed if you find yourself jumping sky high in fear, I still do. every day, like clockwork.

#3-unique restaurants, pubs and cafes:

the beautiful breeze that the east coast provides is just enough to successfully enjoy a sunny lunch out on a balcony at one of the many small cafes and restaurants that halifax has to offer. most queer friendly, some specifically queer these unique places have more to offer than just coffee and sandwiches.

paperchase cafe: a sweet little cafe over a magazine shop that has just about anything you would be looking for. it overlooks a unique part of the city through garage doors that open to expose the area.

the argyle: a lovely restaurant named after the street it’s located on. my personal favorite would be the louisiana chicken sandwich

the wooden monkey:a local, vegetarian and vegan specialty. rumoured to be one of ellen page’s favorite places.

mollyZ: gay gay gay gay full of gay.

as you’ll soon find out, halifax is just as fun and interesting in the fall, winter and spring as it is in the summer. promise. which reason would you enjoy the most?

ciao,

melissa
