Vancouver Queer Film Festival: Short Film Reviews

Posted on August 28th, 2009 by Ambassador: Donovan

Last week I had the pleasure to attend my first Vancouver Queer Film Festival showing – ever. Honestly, I didn’t know much about the film (or short films, as it turned out to be), but I was excited nevertheless. It turned out to be 4 short films: Dinx, Q-Case, King County, and Boycrazy.

Dinx
Dinx was a short film about a young shooter boy/bar-worker who frequently has flashbacks to his past as a young homo. The film parallels his past life as a young queer and life as a shooter boy. The film was cute enough and had some amusing moments. At the start of the film, it seemed like it would go nowhere, but there were enough cute scenes and one liners to keep this light hearted film afloat.

Q-Case
As this was a Vancouver entry in the VQFF, I really wanted to like this film. That, and the director was in presence and introduced himself before the show. Although the director seemed eloquent and well put together, the film did not. The film was an X-files type parody where Mulder and Scully type characters are trying to solve the mystery of the mysteriously comatose tricks. The effects were cheesy, but not quite cheesy enough to be amusing. Compared to the other films, it was apparent that the resources and quality were not on par with the other short films. It seemed more like I was watching a film that got an “A” in their year 1 college film course, but that said, I don’t have much interest watching year 1 film. There were flashes of interesting moments, so I hope to see the director/producer give it another go. Maybe a year 2 film will be better.

King County
Between myself and the company I brought with me, King County was the most amusing short film. It was a mockumentry on a musical audition to find a Broadway hit from 1980s entertainment. It frequently poked fun at gay stereotypes in a fun, crisp and entertaining nature. I’ll never look at Top Gun the same again.

Boycrazy
Honestly, I am not a huge musical person – at all. So when Donovan told me that I am going to see a gay musical…ahh..err…open mind. Open mind. With all my fears aside, and with an open mind, I found the main event really entertaining. The musical scores were oddly catchy and well produced. There were lots of cute moments and there was no lull in movement in the mini-story. The story about a young boy, unrequited love, and a flip-flopping triangle of love and crushes. There were moments were the message gets mangled, until you realize not to read too much into the message. It’s just a fun, catchy, cute and entertaining quip of a film. If only the song would just leave my head now….
