Halloween Superstar Episode 1 Recap

Posted on October 12th, 2009 by ChrisandJohn

Chris & John here with another thrilling blog – the theme de jour: Halloween Superstar episode 1 recap!  Let’s 86 the small talk and cut right to the chase, shall we?

Meeting the six Spooktestants for the first time was actually really exciting.  No one really knew what to expect, or what the competition was all about, all they knew is that we were looking for a Halloween Superstar and that they were going to be on TV.  The first pumpkin carving challenge got really messy, those Spooktestants were ruthless!  They only had 20 minutes to do their best at carving and decorating a pumpkin, so there wasn’t much time for them to be clean or organized in any capacity – and it was interesting to see how ruthless things got right off the bat.  After it was all over, there was pumpkin guts and ketchup and spray paint and feathers and sparkles ALL over the field… and guess who had to clean up all that gak?? WE DID.  The things we do to find our Halloween Superstar.

The next challenge took place at Salem Vintage Photography, which was inspired by a visit we took to Salem a month before we shot the show.  We walked into this place and all we saw was wall-to-wall costumes and these gigantic backdrops and were in complete shock and awe.  The owner immediately shoved us in these elaborate costumes and, the next thing you know, we were working it like Tyra for the camera.  We knew then that we wanted to turn that experience into a challenge for the show – you can really get a sense of someone’s personality by what they choose to wear, what backdrop they shoot in front of, and how they pose and Smize for the camera.

The elimination trial – what you CAN’T tell (or maybe you can) is that it was REALLY COLD.  We’re from Canada, and we’re used to chilly weather, but being outside so long, it just got frigid.  And our Pilgrim costumes didn’t give us much heat.  Although we were really cold, our buff executioner was frozen solid, to the point where he needed to be bundled up with blankets and such between takes.  There weren’t many resources at our disposal, after all we were shooting at Pioneer Village in Salem, so if it wasn’t around circa 1630, it just wasn’t around.  Except for security lights, those were a modern addition.

So when it came to deciding who was sent to the gallows, we knew that Kat and Demon had to go.  Kat did pretty well in the pumpkin carving challenge (to be fair, she had Brian Doyle’s glittery pumpkin to work with, and their tastes are very similar), but her photoshoot just wasn’t all that great, unfortunately… Did somebody say Sleepy Witch?  Kat’s a great girl, but there were so many other strong personalities competing.  Demon we had really high hopes for, but she really struggled with the pumpkin carving challenge and she sort of carried that dejected demeanour throughout the rest of the day.  Needless to say, it was a really difficult decision, but it’s a competition and, as such, people have to get eliminated!

We’re really excited for y’all to see episode 2, it’s got a lot of really fun and exciting things going on – and, of course, there are some shocking twists that you won’t see coming.  LOTS of drama during Ep 2′s elimination trial, you definitely won’t want to miss it.
