Westcoast Culture Vulture Report

Posted on January 14th, 2010 by Ambassador: David C Jones

The West Coast Report – it’s once again time
So here comes 2010 and I will do it rhyme.
Of the first three shows I saw it was an even score
With one show quite great, one good and one poor.

The first was a classic – a fab way to beginnia
It was about George & Martha and their fear of Virginia.
The cast was stellar the subject matter was dark
The drama so great the show broke my heart.
Cocktails and mind games with dark laughter throughout
The spouse abuse was so raw I wanted to shout
But under the cruelty was a passionate care
And ingrained true performances so self unaware
The three acts zipped along belying their breadth
So engrossed was I that I held my breath
Actors lived in each moment and just let themselves go
They all scored high marks but the best was Meg Roe.

The Little Dog Laughed is an American play
About a big movie actor denying he’s gay
A new young company gave staging it a shot
But they need to justify the material that they have got
When the man fell in love with a hustler we couldn’t see why
Because the stud only pouted and gave an exasperated sigh
The play has some truth but is for the most part – quite trite
The actors played heavy when they should have played light
Please don’t be whiny, try to cry or take a long pause
It won’t make us feel or get pulled into your cause
It’s just indulgent and it makes audiences ask why
Anyone would hang with such a gloomy girl or guy
Speak from the heart and let the drama just be
And if the writer wrote jokes it means he intends comedy
Michael Coen Chase was quite charming and both men frequently nude
But at the break my friend wanted to leave, so we did though that’s rude

One last show – I also saw the Broadway parody cabaret
Forbidden Broadway was hilarious and I am pleased to say
Even if you don’t know musicals you are going to love the sass
This cast is so funny and the biting jokes are a gas
Poking fun at self importance and over indulgence
It’s vicious and funny and often makes sense
As it calls out sacred cows and rips them apart
The budget might be small but the show gave you it’s heart.
The cast handled comedy and scored many a win
Which is great because a few of the voices were thin
But two were so good that it made me often say ‘wow’
Bravo to all but especially Cathy Wilmot and Aaron Lau!
