Montreal Pride: Now until Aug 15!

Posted on August 13th, 2010 by Vanessa

After the success of the first three editions, Montréal Pride is preparing another exciting and colourful program celebrating the LGBTA community!

One of the major highlights of this year’s event will be the brand new route on René-Lévesque Boulevard West, from Guy Street to Sanguinet, right in the heart of downtown Montréal. With easy access to the Métro, the parade is sure to attract thousands of spectators. As well, the 2010 parade route will be extended from 1.25km to 2.35, almost doubling the length of previous years.

The parade will take place on Sunday, August 15 at 1 p.m. with the concept of “Our Superheroes” guiding the artistic direction of the floats. This is sure to provide an entertaining flashback to childhood memories for participants and spectators alike. The parade will definitely have something for everyone, especially families, promising to be one of the most original events organized in years. The parade route will finish near Émilie-Gamelin Park, the heart of the festivities, where the celebrations will wrap up with an outdoor mega T-Dance.

Community Day, one of the key events in the Montréal Pride Celebrations, will be held again this year all along Sainte-Catherine Street between Berri and Papineau on Saturday, August 14.

HUMAN RIGHTS COMPONENT

Under the theme, “Share the Pride”, the Montréal Pride Celebrations 2010 wanted to create awareness of the fact that, although there have been significant social and legal advances in Québec and in Canada, many members of the LBGTA community around the world face the violation of their fundamental rights on a daily basis. The Montréal Pride Celebrations will reach out to some of these communities, to try to work together to improve the current human rights situation. In this regard, and for the first time in the history of the Montréal Pride, our Grand Marshals are not from Québec and will come from Latvia: Mr. Kaspars Zalitis and Ms. Kristine Garina, are human rights activists and members of the LGBT and their friends alliance “Mozaika”, the only functioning gay rights organization in Latvia. They are both actively involved in the organization of the Baltic Pride in Riga.

CULTURAL COMPONENT

Presented in French at the Cinquième Salle of Place des Arts and orchestrated by Jasmin Roy, Les Gaydailles contre-attaquent ! serves up a unique concept: a reflection on the reality of the gay and lesbian world today. In this irreverent show, Jasmine Roy will play “The Super-Gay

Service Guy”, Nadja will be “The Diva”, Pierre-Olivier Cyr is “The Hypnotist”, Mathilde Laurier is “The Carpet-Muncher”, Guillaume Wagner is “The Sower of Doubt” and Michel Sigouin is “The Radical Straight”. The show is inspired by the past year’s headlines that have affected, in one way or another, the gay community. August 11, 13 and 14  at 9:30 pm.

Friday the Opéra de Montréal and The Karaoke Channel are organizing the Karaoké OPÉRA, a première for the Montréal Pride Celebrations. This special event gives the general public the opportunity to sing the most beautiful operatic arias and Broadway songs karaoke-style, on an open-air stage in front of a live audience. A concert by Les B.B., with Joe Bocan and Martine St-Clair, will follow. No other Québécois group has lived a pop success story comparable to Les B.B. Patrick Bourgeois, François Jean and Alain Lapointe will take up the TD Music stage at 9 pm. Saturday, August 14.

Place Émilie-Gamelin lights up with the Health and Wellbeing Space, where a number of organizations get together to offer pertinent information on health. In addition, two Fashion Shows are scheduled at 2 pm and 7:15 pm, presenting the Gregg underwear and the Superstein models.

At 7:30 pm, we will find out who’s the big winner of the “Queer of the Year” contest. (Editor’s note: Go Sean Horlor!!)

To conclude the evening, Michel Dorion is back with the 2010 edition of “C’est la fête”, a variety show featuring a multidisciplinary cast of artists from the LGBTA community (singers, dancers, drag queens, musicians, etc.). Part of the show will include a tribute to Guilda, now 86 years old and one of Québec’s greatest cabaret artists. This is a large-scale production serving up three exciting hours of entertainment you won’t want to miss, at 8 pm at the TD Music stage.
