As we come to the close of another year I thought it would be good to reflect on the gays in Vancouver who blew me away. Most of these people you probably haven’t heard of but they are doing such cool things they humble and inspire me.
In random order….The Top Ten Gays…

1) Spencer Herbert – newly elected NDP Member of BC Legislature. One of the youngest ever – he is soft spoken, attentive and I was so hoping he would win that I volunteered and manned the phones one day at his campaign office.

2) Malaika Millions – a vivacious entertainer / promoter who brought mud wrestling to the lesbian masses and only allowed straight men in if the were “gay approved” and wore a sticker to prove it. She has moved to LA now to be with her girlfriend and Vancouver is a little less naughty.

3) Dean Nelson & Ken Coolen - The new heads of Whistler Gay Ski Week who bring an eclectic mix of international and LOCAL entertainers to dazzle the masses in snowy Whistler.

4) Stephen Mulligan – I don’t know his actually job title but he works for the school board and this year ask me to be a part of the epic Pride in Education Professional Development day. Dozens of workshops and speakers for teachers and students.

5) Steven Dang – works for the City of Vancouver and their Youth Politick conference, which I facilitate at and this year asked my queer improv group The Bobbers to be part of the evening entertainment. This is one of two “straight” events that the troupe was asked to perform at this year and the crowd loved them. As a middle aged fag I find that awesome.

6) Danny Enright - a Lay Chaplain for the Unitarian Church who created a Coming Out Ceremony for the church as well as an educational session to answer the straight Chaplain’s questions about the new gay ceremony’s like “Who walks down the aisle at a same sex wedding?”

7) Michael V. Smith – a producer/ film maker / writer / celebrity who was also part of The Odd Ball an amazing party that is no more since he has moved away to teach in the interior of BC. When he showed up at an event you knew it was special.

8) Dianna David, Peter Breeze and Ryan Steele – I am cheating again by lumping all these folks together but here are three unabashedly queer performing artists who are forging a name for themselves in the world of entertainment. You Tube or Google them and see for yourself.

9) Drew Dennis – Executive Director of The Out on Screen Festival and an amazing consensus builder open to ideas and inspiration and as a result the festival has grown in size and scope over the last three years at a dizzying rate adding the Queer History Project and Out In Schools and nurturing local artists.

10) Vancouver Film School Acting Students – I teach here and watching some of the young men and women come out in such a creative but safe environment particularly with so many international students is simply beautiful – I am proud to know Matt, Josh, Elizabeth, Derek and all the rest. But my honorary straight guy on this list and in this group is Boris who came from a small town sporting background who at the end of his first term wrote me the greatest letter, part of it reads
“It’s weird to say, but thank you for being yourself. I was very homophobic, and didn’t want to give you a chance as a person when I first met you. I apologize, and sincerely want to thank you for ridding me of my ignorance towards gay people, and in turn other people who I find to be different in someway.”
They are all out in the world now and I can’t wait for our paths to cross again. It has been said before that youth are the future and when I meet and get to know these kids I am filled with wonder and hope.

So there it is – my list of cool gays (and one straight guy) who make a difference and blow me away. I hope you found it eclectic and a little inspirational as it is to me.
Have a great 2009.

Middle Age Fag

I hope you are are swell. I am apparently am swelling.

This weekend I am hoping to attend Justice – yet another Vancouver rally in regards to a local gay bashing. It’s so depressing. Maybe instead of holding so many rally’s we should just have one big day of protest and use it as a ‘catch-all’ for all the queer protests. It can be the opposite of Pride and happen in the winter so those who suffer from seasonal depression can really tap into something. You know Summer = Pride and Winter = Rage.

I have been busy rehearsing Dianna David’s new multi-media comedy dance piece – soon to tour across Canada – watch for it and lett me know what you think. It’s called Sharing Our Creativity. Isn’t that sweet?

Speaking of sweets – I have packed on 7 pounds in the last couple weeks. Ending my relationship has clearly had an adverse effect on my self control. (I burst into tears when I got a text from Dianna because as I was replying I thought ‘well HE will never text me again’ Wahhhh! How pathetic is that?

So apparently I have been indulging but maybe I am not depressed – maybe I am just adding on extra padding for the winter season and something to cushion the blows if I get bashed.
