I am very excited about the premiere of Hot Pink Shorts: The Making of this Friday at 8pm. The Vancouver office has been a flurry activity (and late nights) as the show goes through the final editing process. ‘Hot Pink Shorts: The Making Of’ features six unique queer filmmakers as OUTtv gives them the chance to make their very own short films. Using hotpinkshorts.com as a platform to discover the talent, web users themselves were given the opportunity to bring their favorite filmmakers and story ideas into the spotlight.

Once chosen the featured 6 filmmakers experience an intensive 3‐month film school 101. Mentored by queer industry professionals, the finalists are taken step by step through the entire production process from scripting and crewing, to casting and location scouting. The behind the scenes drama and their projects themselves come to life in front of our eyes. Each episode will highlight one of our GLBT filmmakers, featuring their journey from concept through the agonies of post-production and final delivery. ‘Hot Pink Shorts: The Making Of’ truly showcases the rollercoaster like adventure that is filmmaking.

Episode 1 – Gina Daggett – Til Death Do Us Toby

Meet Gina Daggett, columnist, writer, producer and first time filmmaker. Gina doesn’t have the experience but she certainly has the ideas and the enthusiasm to make her project ‘Til Death Do Us Toby’ a smashing success.

Meet Kevin Kostal, eager and creative film school student with a passion for everything film related. What Kevin lacks in confidence he makes up for with his keen style and vision. Two things that make his first short film ‘Short Sight,’ a fantastic achievement.

It’s time to rep some hometown talent: Michael Mew, queer short film director. Hailing from Vancouver, BC, this movie-maker has quite the career behind him to date. Six shorts under his belt (please don’t misinterpret that statement) and a few potential features on the docket, Mew is keeping active and influential in the west coast film community.

Masculinity is almost indefinable.

Whether we’re talking about masculinity or femininity, ‘acting like a man’ or ‘acting butch’, being faggoty, flamboyant, straight-acting or queer… these are all contestable terms, frequently used to describe segments of our community. Some may disagree with their usage, while others may use “queeney flambo” to describe their nearest and dearest.

Regardless, these terms are difficult to agree on; difficult to define.

Gender performance, or in this case masculinity, is almost indefinable.

Montreal-based filmmaker Owen Eric Wood explores this contentious subject in his short film Made Up. It’s a film that makes no attempt to explain/identify/define the m-word, but rather demonstrate its fluidity.

Saturday Double Bill – January 17th starting at 9pm ET / PT

Tides of War will kick off our action packed double bill. Set in the cold, dark waters off North Korea, a US Navy submarine meets with a mysterious disaster. The sub’s captain, played by Adrian Paul, faces a court martial but he’s rescued from his fate when he’s chosen to lead a top secret mission back to tap a North Korean underwater communications cable.

In Her Line of Fire is flick number 2, starring Mariel Hemingway. When the Vice President’s plane goes down near a remote South American Island, he is kidnapped by rebel forces and held for ransom.
